A Call to Grace, Mercy and Christlike Compassion
"Once again the Lord spoke to me. And this time he said, “Hosea, fall in love with an unfaithful woman who has a lover. Do this to show that I love the people of Israel, even though they worship idols and enjoy the offering cakes made with fruit.” — Hosea 3:1 (CEV)
When we look back on some of our past relationships or encounters, it becomes clear that not everyone deserves to receive our love—especially those who once wounded us deeply. Sometimes the pain is so real that loving them again feels impossible.
This is exactly where Prophet Hosea found himself. Yet God instructed him to go back and love his unfaithful wife, Gomer. Hosea’s story wasn’t just about marriage—it was a living, breathing illustration of God’s unwavering love toward undeserving people. Despite Israel's unfaithfulness, God kept pursuing, forgiving, and loving them.
Today, through faith in God and the finished work of our glorious Savior Jesus Christ, we too have become His children. And just like Israel, we often craft our own “idols”—the things we place above God’s will. But even in our flaws, failures, and weaknesses, God still pours out His unchanging love on us.
Our Lord Jesus Christ gave us a radical command:
“But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” — Matthew 5:44
This kind of love is impossible without the help of the Holy Spirit. Thank God that we have His Spirit living within us—strengthening us, transforming us, and empowering us to love even those who hurt us. As we receive His grace, mercy and compassion, we are to extend same grace, mercy and compassion to all people and not leaving anyone out. This is the true evidence of God’s nature at work within us. Hallelujah!
We may not be asked to return to past relationships, just as Hosea was instructed. God's command to Hosea was unique for a divine purpose. Yet, the Holy Spirit will always lead us to do what reflects God’s heart: to forgive, release bitterness, and let go of offenses.
This is God’s will for His children. And as we walk in His will, we display the love that the world cannot explain—a love that truly comes from Him.
