> “There is no fear in love; perfect love drives out all fear. So then, love has not been made perfect in anyone who is afraid, because fear has to do with punishment.”
— 1 John 4:18 (GNB)
Among the twelve apostles of our glorious Savior Jesus Christ, Apostle John spoke most profoundly about the love of God. It is no surprise that he is often referred to as “John the Beloved.” His life and writings reveal a deep personal revelation of God’s love—one that was not merely taught, but experienced.
John was especially close to Jesus and was among the three apostles—Peter, James, and John—who witnessed intimate and powerful moments with the Lord: the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairus’ daughter, and the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. Yet beyond these encounters, John leaned into something deeper—the heart of Christ.
It was this intimate relationship with Jesus that shaped John’s understanding of love. He came to realize that God’s love is not fearful, condemning, or distant, but perfect, secure, and liberating. That is why he boldly declares that perfect love drives out fear. Fear thrives where punishment is expected, but love flourishes where grace is fully known.
To be called into God’s perfect love is to be freed from the fear of rejection, judgment, and condemnation. In Christ, we are not loved conditionally—we are loved completely. When this truth settles in our hearts, fear loses its power, and we begin to live boldly, confidently, and securely in Him.
May we, like John, grow in intimacy with Christ until our lives reflect the same revelation:
We are deeply loved—and in that love, fear has no place.
