As a result, the market is seeing a rapid and decisive shift towards cloud-based solutions, with most on-premises vendors now offering a cloud version of their product to remain competitive.

The market can also be effectively segmented by the size of the organization: Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and Large Enterprises. Historically, enterprise architecture was primarily the domain of large enterprises. These multinational corporations and large government bodies had the scale, complexity, and resources to justify the significant investment in establishing a formal EA practice. Their vast and intricate IT landscapes, coupled with the need for strict governance and standardization, made EA an essential discipline for managing complexity and aligning global operations. The needs of large enterprises continue to drive the high-end of the market, demanding sophisticated, scalable tools with robust governance and integration capabilities. However, in recent years, the market for SMEs has opened up considerably. This is largely due to the rise of more affordable, user-friendly, and cloud-based EA tools. SMEs now face many of the same challenges as large enterprises—managing cloud costs, ensuring security, and aligning IT with business goals—albeit on a smaller scale. Recognizing this, many EA vendors now offer tiered pricing and "lite" versions of their products specifically designed for the SME segment. This democratization of EA is a significant growth driver for the market, expanding its addressable audience beyond the traditional Fortune 500 and Global 2000 companies.

Finally, a vertical industry segmentation provides crucial insights into the specific drivers and use cases for enterprise architecture. Different industries adopt EA for different reasons and with different priorities. The Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) sector has long been a leading adopter due to its intense regulatory environment, complex legacy systems, and the constant threat of security breaches. For BFSI firms, EA is critical for risk management, compliance (e.g., Basel III, Solvency II), and modernizing core banking platforms. The Government and Defense sector is another major vertical, where EA is used to manage vast and complex organizations, promote interoperability between agencies, and ensure the responsible use of public funds (e.g., through frameworks like FEAF). The Telecommunications industry relies on EA to manage its complex network infrastructure and to support the rapid rollout of new services like 5G. Meanwhile, emerging adopters include Healthcare, where EA helps to manage electronic health records and ensure HIPAA compliance, and Manufacturing, where it is used to design smart factories and manage complex supply chains for Industry 4.0 initiatives. Understanding the unique pain points and strategic objectives of each vertical allows vendors and service providers to tailor their offerings and messaging for maximum impact.
